Yep. It is that dreaded time of year. Tax Time! Not much fun to do, but well worth it if you are anticipating a refund!

But, in order to get a refund, you will want to be sure that you aren’t deducting something you shouldn’t….like….for example…..claiming the CFL Bulbs you bought were an energy efficient addition to your home. Naughty – Naughty! That one could just land you a very cozy, one-on-one, intimate visit with your local IRS Auditor. And really – wouldn’t we all rather just stay as far a way from that one as possible?

Your solution — use a tax preparation software service to assist you. There are many on the market and some will let you file for free. Most will help guide you through the preparation services and can help you to locate those hidden deductions and maximize your refund. Here are a couple that I have heard of and actually used and would feel comfortable recommending. Both offer free basic tax preparation and e-filing (where you electronically submit your refund and get your money faster).

Turbo Tax OnLine

TaxAct

You can also go to a tax preparer such as Jackson Hewitt or H&R Block. You can go to either preparer right now and even save $20.00. Click here for a coupon for Jackson Hewitt or here to print one off to use at H&R Block.

Be very careful of getting any cash advance cards or other gift cards in lieu of, or in advance of, your refund. There can be hidden fees, so you want to carefully review the fine print before agreeing to these.

If you don’t have all of your forms yet, just relax. Employers, Banks, Investment Companies, and the like all have until January 31, 2009 to have this MAILED to you….meaning postmarked by that date and not necessarily in your hot little hands. So, if you don’t have your forms, just be patient and give it a little time to arrive. If you are still missing items by February 10th, then you can start letting your fingers do the walking so you can find out what is going on. Perhaps you moved and forgot to get them your new address. Things like this happen all of the time. Just always be courteous…..you will get much further if you are.

Finally, remember that you have until April 15th to get these filed (unless you file an extension), but why put off the inevitable. I mean, we all know the two guarantees in life are death and taxes and to be honest, I think I’d rather deal with my taxes right now than the other one!

A Full Cup

Here is another great site that provides coupons and freebies. It is called AFullCup.com. Just click the picture above and sign up. You can find all sorts of coupons that are available and you can even sign up and swap coupons.

One great feature about this site is simple and easy access to Target coupons. If you will recall in Coupon 101, if you have a Target coupon and a manufacturer’s coupon — you can use them BOTH and save even more money!!! How cool is that? I will say that sometimes the cashier might give you “the look”, but remember you’re doing nothing wrong and that they will get BACK the value of the manufacturer’s coupon anyhow – so they aren’t out a thing.

So sign up, and have some fun!! Let’s all save us some money, money, money….MONEY!!!!!

Price Check on Aisle 5

by Tracie on January 27, 2009

One thing I have learned to do over the years is to always watch when the cashier is ringing up my items – as much as possible. This is especially important when the item is on sale.

Recently, I was in a store…..we shall call it “Bulls eye.” I purchased some Peppridge Farms crackers that had a sign in front of them that said Special Promotion – $2.50. I thought that was a good deal, since my children consume mounds of these as if they are going out of style.

I was in a hurry, didn’t feel well and just wanted to get home. Well, I got jipped! They ended up ringing up at the standard price of $3.68. So, I have my receipt in hand and will take it with me when I go back in the next time. They will be able to see that this item WAS on sale the day I was there, but the computer did not properly charge me.

While I know I will get reimbursed by them, I now have to remember to do that and soon. This is a receipt I will be using for the P&G Deal I posted about here. That means, I need to remember to do this within the next couple of weeks and with extreme sleep deprivation and a raging head cold, I am lucky that I remember which way my underwear go on in the morning, let alone to remember to go to Customer Service when I head to “Bulls eye.”

Had I been paying attention like I so often do, I would have noticed it ring up at the wrong price and could have had it adjusted right there on the spot. After all, this is well over one hundred pennies…..pennies that are all mine!

6.75% to start….and now 21%!?!? I can’t afford it now!

This post may contain affiliate links. Read my disclosure policy here.

by Tracie on January 26, 2009

So, you got an application in the mail that if you opened a new card with ABC Company, you could get a GREAT introductory rate of 6.75%….or even lower!! So, you don’t think twice, holler out “WHERE DO I SIGN”, and send it in. You transfer those balances and continue to make a nice smaller payment. Ahhhh…..right? Um….wrong!

After those introductory rates are over, it is nothing for them to increase your rate up to 18%, 21% or even MORE! And, this applies to prior and new purchases. Let us also not forget that many times, transfers are considered cash advances, for which you can be charged an even HIGHER rate. This in turn increases your monthly payment and leaves you hunting and searching for another card to transfer your balance to.

Many will play the credit card jumping game, but opening and closing accounts frequently does nothing but actually begin to diminish your credit rating. So, if you want to keep transferring balances, be sure to not do it too often and be sure to leave the other card open for a while, before closing it out.

So, you are thinking, what do I do if I can’t get approved for a new card with a lower rate? Pick up your phone and contact the credit card company directly and ask for a lower rate. Many times, they are willing to reduce your rate, which in turn can reduce your minimum monthly payment. If the operator says that they can not do that, ask to speak to that person’s supervisor. Many times, the operators don’t have the authority to lower the rates, but someone a little higher up can. It never hurts to ask…..as I have heard of some companies dropping the rates to 0%!

You can also let them know that you are having a hard time making your payments and they may have some options available to help you get the card paid in full. Remember though, no matter whom you speak with, be sure to get a name, number and time of day you spoke. Ask if they have a Representative or ID# and write that down as well. Ask them to send something to you in writing to confirm the conversation so you have written documentation that they are agreeing to your payment terms.

But, you say, I don’t have credit card debt…..I have medical debt. The same can hold true in this situation as well. Contact the billing office and see if they can arrange payment terms. Sometimes, they will say you have to make an amount that is more than you can afford. Don’t agree to something you simply can not afford. Instead, send them what you CAN afford each month. If they cash your check, they are agreeing to your terms. Otherwise, they will need to return the check to you and let you know that it is not an acceptable payment amount.

So, don’t be afraid to place a phone call and ask for what you want. Remember this though:You can catch more flies with honey than vinegar. So be polite and kind. Remember what your mama taught you — please and thank you can take you pretty far in this world. Hmmmm….isn’t it funny how the things you learn when you are 2 still work when you are 32?

Keeping Your Coupons Organized

This post may contain affiliate links. Read my disclosure policy here.

by Tracie on January 25, 2009

I am sure you have all been working on compiling your coupon collection and reading them to know what you can and can’t use them for, right? Well, now you need to be able to keep them all organized so that you know what you have and don’t find it when you get home AFTER you have already made your purchase.

Here is where you must have at least some organization in your life. That doesn’t mean you have to alphabetize your coupons (even I don’t do that), but at least have some semblance of order. You can actually keep your coupons organized in a few ways. We’ll start small and work up the to grand daddy organizer.

SMALL AND HANDY. You can find small organizers at places such as Dollar General, the Dollar Store or even Walmart and Target. These normally have about 8 – 12 slots for you to put your coupons in.

Most of the time they do not have labels on the sections, which allows you complete customization. If you have 8 sections, great sections to start with include:

Health/Beauty
Refrigerated/Frozen
Meat/Produce
Paper Goods
Household
Pets
Snacks
Retail

Just find sections that work for your life and your couponing needs.

TRENDY BUT SIMPLE. When your small organizer begins to bust at the seams, you will need to upgrade to something bigger. I personally recommend The Couponizer (see link in my sidebar).

This is the system I have used myself. The cost is about $25.00 (which will include shipping/handling). This is an INCREDIBLE organizer. It has sections for you to put the coupons you intend to use, those you need at checkout and has ways to help you quickly sort and organize your collection of coupons. If you have a birthday coming up, saving the link for your spouse or significant other may not be a bad idea! WINK! WINK!

THE BEAST. That is what I sometimes affectionately call my binder. This is the grand daddy of coupon collecting.

The first thing I purchased was my binder. I wanted one that had a handle and strap so that it would be easier to get in and out of the store. Plus, I can put it over my shoulder and NOT leave it behind ever again (I pray).

It also has a smaller zipper where I have placed my scissors (to cut out coupons as needed) and a calculator (which I carry to find the best deal based upon package sizing).

I did spend a little more to get what I wanted and even purchased a very inexpensive warranty. Now, I normally would not recommend one, but in this case it was worth it. If anything breaks including the binder not closing shut, or the zipper or anything, within one year, I get a new one for free. As most couponers know, your binder is your bible and gets MUCH wear and tear and can easily break, so this could definitely pay off.

The other feature I liked about the binder was the outside pocket. It is removable, but also has built in file dividers. This is great to use to hold my inserts before I have a chance to cut and place them into my binder.

I then purchased plastic baseball card holders to hold the coupons and other items. I paid a little more and got some that have more weight to them. My hopes is that these will hold up longer than their cheaper, lighter weight counterparts.

I have tabs to divide my sections. I did not get the ones with insertable tabs as those can easily fall out. Rather, I paid a tad more and got some that are re-writable. However, I have a label maker, so I typed up my labels and can easily pull them off and change the section if I need to.

The sections I have in my binder include:

Baby
Bakery (I put all breads, rolls, etc here)
Baking
Canned/Boxed Items
Beverages
Condiments
Breakfast
Meat/Produce
Dairy
Refrigerated
Frozen
Household (things such as batteries, bug spray)
Laundry
Cleaning Products (anything but laundry or dishwashing)
Dishwashing
Medicine
Paper/Plastic (includes disposable dinnerware to toilet tissue)
Hair Care
Oral Care
Soap/Body Wash
Shaving/Deodorant
Beauty/Feminine Care
Snacks
Retailer (includes coupons and catalinas)

The last thing I placed in my binder was a plastic zipper pocket. I have this so that I have a place to put coupons that I may have clipped, but just didn’t have a chance to file. I can also use it to put any coupons that are about to expire so that I don’t forget to use them.

I really want to thank Krazy Coupon Lady for her great binder download. I was able to look at this to remember the categories I had and even add a few more to make it easier to find what I need in the store.

So there ya go! Hopefully this can help someone else build a binder that will make it easier for them to use coupons too!

COUPON DATABASE. One thing that I have added to help everyone who follows this site, is the insert and All You magazine database. You can access it through the sidebar or right here. This lists all of the coupons that are currently available in our region, including when they were int the paper and even the expiration date.

Hopefully you can get now get your coupons organized so as you walk into a store, you will feel empowered to start saving money. We’ll keep on learning how to use these coupons and discuss store policies coming up soon!
