I have now read several reports about consumers being incorrectly credited for coupons at Target.  I know that this has happened to some of you, but if it hasn’t you will definitely want to read up so that you can be ready the next time you shop.  There is an article that has been published, which you should take a moment to read, so you know what to watch for when you shop: Target Accused of Not Giving Full Value On Coupons.

In a nutshell, what is happening is that guests who use coupons are not getting the full value of their coupon applied to their purchase.  This all stemmed from Target trying to have their registers adjust the value of the coupon down, should the coupon value exceed the value of the product.  The above article sites a great example, which can help you better understand what is happening:

If you purchase 2 items at $0.69 each and the coupon you hand over a coupon for $0.75/2, the computer adjusts the value of the coupon from deducting $0.75 from your purchase to only $0.69.  While this may seem small, it can add up very quickly to your overpaying for items that you shouldn’t be.

Target is working hard to correct this problem.  However, it is one that you should be aware of when you shop.  Here are some tips I recommend you follow any time you use coupons – but especially now with this issue at Target.

Make a mental note of the coupons you are using and the value before you hand them over. I know that this can be hard to do, but as use coupons more and more, you’ll remember which you are using and the value so you can be sure that you don’t over pay for your  items.

Watch the register.  I always make sure that I see the full value of the coupon being deducted.  It can be more difficult with Target store coupons, but you should be able to watch the computer screen and see the credit to your purchase be applied.

Check your receipt.  Before you even leave the store, go through your receipt and make sure that the correct coupons were applied.  I had one that had a difficult time scanning (for whatever reason) and it ended up not being credited.  So, I took my receipt directly to Guest Services and they were able to go to that register and pull out my coupons and see that I didn’t have it applied and they refunded me the difference.

I have also had coupons not even show up at all, but they put them in their drawer. This has happend several times, the computer does not take them and the checker does not notice and puts them in the drawer. Don’t just listen for the beep, look at your reciept. Thanks for all the info!

What a great heads up!! I have had this happen but was able to watch the register and catch it. Another thing I do is tally up my total spend before getting in line- especially helpful when I have the little ones with me!!

Target has usually been really helpful in these situations. The couple of times they weren’t able to take the coupons they gave them back & took the items off at my request.

Happy shopping!! Thanks for all you do!

I have seen some people hand the clerk one coupon at a time and make sure it gets deducted properly. Takes time and makes people further back in the line a little upset, but you do what you have to do to make sure you get the proper credit for coupons.

Good advice! This just happened to me this week. I had a coupon for $2.50 off 3 packs of Huggies wipes. I checked my receipt and it only took off $1.99. I took it back to the register I checked out at, and they fixed the problem. I will be more careful at Target!

This happened to me with the 2/1 shout wipes. I was buying the travel size wipes which are $.97 meaning that I would get 2 for 1 coupon. The register was just giving me credit for one item instead of both and the cashier was fixing the problem when this other lady came and told her that she shouldn’t do it because they have to go with whatever the cash register gives credit too, not what the manufacturer coupon says. I was able to get it adjusted but “for next time” the lady said they would not to it…and I love target!! : )
