Did you know that on average 1 in 6 kids only get the food that is served to them at their school? That includes the evenings and even the weekends. It breaks my heart to know that kids are going hungry like this, but there is something I can do about it.
Fortunately, our school district has instilled the C.A.N. Program (Caring About Nutrition). This program helps kids by sending them home with foods they can fix themselves, so that they do not go hungry. The program is unable to function without the help of members of our community. The great part of this is that it doesn’t matter if you have kids who are in the school district or not – anyone can (and is invited) to help!
How can you help? There are actually several ways to do just that.
Money. If you don’t have the time to shop or to volunteer, you can always send a monetary contribution to the cause. The money sent will be used to stock the pantry so that the packages can be assembled. The address is:
Raymore-Peculiar Schools Foundation
Memo: C.A.N. Program
21005 S. School Road
P.O. Box 789
Peculiar, MO 64078
Time. Each week, bags are assembled for confidential distribution to students. You can contact one of the Program Directors on this page if you want to donate your time.
Food. This is the simplest way you can help! When you are shopping at the store each week, you can pick up a few extra items to donate. It is just very important that what you purchase can be prepared by small children. Make sure you stick to the food items on the C.A.N. Program List to ensure that the products will work.
These items can be dropped off at any Ray-Pec school in the barrels located at the front entrances. You can also donate them at the Chamber of Commerce (1000 W. Foxwood Drive in Raymore).
If you are wanting to help this week, here are some deals you will want to check out – as they are on sale and so you can save money and pay it forward at the same time!
