Tax Free Back to School Shopping

by Tracie on July 16, 2010 · 3 comments

The old saying goes “There are only two guarantee in life – Death & Taxes.”  Well, I’m here to tell you that the latter can be avoided in some states starting in August!

Many states realize the additional financial burden back to school can place on families.  So, they institute Tax Free Weekend shopping events in their state.  You can usually purchase your supplies, clothing, shoes and electronics tax free (there are limitations on some of these so always check with your state before you head out to shop).   Unfortunately, however, not all states offer such a program.  Here is a list of all of the states that are participating for 2010:

AUGUST 6th – AUGUST 8th

Alabama: Alabama Department of Revenue
Iowa:  Only August 6th – 7th  Iowa Dept. of Revenue
Louisiana:  Only August 6th – 7th Louisiana Department of Revenue
Missouri: Missouri Department of Revenue
New Mexico: List Of Taxable and Nontaxable Items (refer to Page 3)
North Carolina:  North Carolina Department of Revenue – August Sales Tax Holiday
Oklahoma: Oklahoma Tax Commission
South Carolina: South Carolina Department of Revenue
Tennessee: Tennessee Sales Tax Holiday Information
Virginia: School Supplies and Clothing Holiday

ADDITIONAL DATES / STATES

Florida: August 13th – 15th Florida Department of Revenue
Connecticut: August 22nd – August 28th Connecticut Department of Revenue
Maryland:
August 8th – 14th Maryland Sales Tax Bulletin
Mississippi:  July 30th – July 31st Official Guide For 2010 Sales Tax Holiday
Texas: A
ugust 20th – 22nd Texas Tax Holiday Official Page

One very important thing to also note is that not all counties, parishes and/or cities particiapte in the event.  Therefore, you will need to clik the link next to your state to see if your area is included or excluded from the event.

Thanks Savor the Savings!

Possible K-Mart Doubles July 4 – 10

by Tracie on July 2, 2010 · 2 comments

It looks like some areas are going to have double coupons for anyone who is a Shop Your Way Rewards member.  This event will start on July 4th and run through the 10th.  Since these seem to vary from store to store, you definitely will want to check.

I am actually a little wary of even sharing this with everyone, since KMart seems to penalize My Rewards members the value of the coupon when they are doubled.  So, keep that in mind and watch your balances after they are applied to your account.

Thanks Coupons Equal Cash!

Kmart: Shop Your Way Rewards Issues

by Tracie on May 19, 2010 · 2 comments

I know that many of you have the Kmart Shop Your Way Rewards card and are using it to accumulate points towards rewards.  Did you know that you are possibly being penalized for using coupons?  It recently came to the attention of one of Penny Pinchin’ Mom’s readers – Stephanie – and she shared her findings with me.

Apparently, when your coupon is deducted from your total (especially with the double coupon events), the coupon total is abducted again from your total spent.  This has resulted in some members actually having negative account balances on thier cards.  I know, it sounds crazy, but it is true.  Here is some of the information that Stephanie shared with me, which she also emailed to Kmart, in an attempt to get the matter resolved.

…. I went and made a purchase during the double coupon event, what I paid, out of pocket was $28.48 It’s listed in my rewards account as a purchase of only $16.47. I figured out how that number came about too, you take what you paid, subtract the sales tax and then subtract the value of any coupons you used. So, my coupons were doubled at the register and then subtracted out one more time before they were figured for rewards. I should have earned rewards on what came out of my pocket, the $28.48, not $16.47 So, basically I got double coupons for what I paid, but triple coupons for what I earned. …………

Kmart responded with this response:

……I am sorry for the inconvenience this has caused. The formula for issuing rewards is so complex that I do not feel I can adequately explain it. As a one time courtesy, I have added the 36 rewards points you feel were missed for your purchase.

Please be aware that this is the standard way that rewards are issued for double coupons, and that they may be calculated in the same manner the next time this special is offered in the future…..

I also had them tell me that the policy very confusing and hard to explain.  I don’t think it is hard to say this:  use double coupons and you pay the price.

I just wanted to be sure that all of my readers were aware of this issue so that you can check your balances and address it with Kmart if you have any concerns.  Their slogan is “There is Smart – and there is Kmart Smart.”   I, for one, am proud to say that I am NOT Kmart smart.

Several of you have already been to KMart (more than once) to take part in the double coupon event that runs through this Saturday, April 10th.  I have had a few of you ask for some double coupon deals that might work for you, so I tracked down a few posts that might help some of you out.

Each of these bloggers has done a great job compiling deals and pricing – -but always keep in mind that both prices and even coupons can differ by region.

The other day, I shared with everyone, a coupon for $10.00 off of a $20.00 purchase.  I have since learned that the coupon was to have been used only at certain stores in New York — and not meant for the general public.    I know some of you were able to use this, but most of you have been told it isn’t going to be accepted.    I have removed the links in all of my posts to this coupon and crossed through it on any scenarios I ran including it — so that none of you would waste paper/ink in printing something you couldn’t use.  Who knows – maybe sometime we can get a legitimate coupon here as well!

K-Mart’s Double Coupon event is just a few weeks away.  One of my readers, Stephanie, took the time to contact Kmart to try to get all of the official details.  She kindly passed them along to me so that I could share them with all of you.  So, here are your rules:

* Offer Dates 4/4/10 – 4/10/10

* Manufacturer’s Coupons up to and including $2.00 will be doubled.

* In-Store Activation MUST BE tied to your Shop Your Way to Rewards card.

* Does NOT include Kmart coupons.

* Does NOT include Kmart Pharmacy store coupons.

* Limit of 5 total coupons per day, per customer.

* First 5 coupons provided will be doubled.

Hopefully this answers a lot of the questions some of you might have.  Happy Double Couponing!

Thanks Stephanie!
