Ten Things You Need To Know About Shopping at Aldi

This post may contain affiliate links. Read my disclosure policy here.

If you have never shopped at Aldi, you may not realized what a great way resource it is to help you save! Take a look at these TEN Must Know Tips before you head out to shop!!!

I know a lot of people shop at ALDI and love it (me included).  If you haven’t ever shopped at one, or aren’t sure if you should, there are some things you need to know before you head out to your store.  Even if you currently shop there, they may be things you don’t know about, which can help you too!

1. Bring along a quarter.  You have to “rent” your shopping cart.  You simply slide a quarter into the slot and then do your shopping.  When you are done, you will return your cart and connect the lock and your quarter will be returned to you.  This keeps carts from being left in the parking lot which saves on damage to cars.  It also saves the store money as they don’t have to pay someone to run to the parking lot and corral the carts.

*Bonus tip:  Make someone’s day and just give them your cart when you are through.  You’ll be surprised at how much a small gesture can make someone’s day!

2. Don’t forget your bags.  Aldi doesn’t have bags.  Well, they do, but you have to purchase them.  One way they keep prices low is that they don’t purchase paper or plastic bags for you to take your items home.  They do have boxes in the store, which you can use if you happen to forget yours.  I just keep my bags in my van and grab them every time I walk into the store.

In addition to bringing your own bags, you will have to sack your groceries too.  I actually prefer this as it seems the kid a the grocery store always puts every heavy item into just one bag or mixes my cold and canned items.  I can sort them as I want, which makes unloading and putting away my items so much simpler!

3.  Don’t like something?  Get your money back! This is one thing many people do not know about Aldi.  If you ever try a product and it is not the quality that you expect or you just were not satisfied, you can get your money back.  Strike that.  You can actually get your money back PLUS a replacement product!  Just take the item and your receipt back to your store and they will gladly take care of you.  Note that the guarantee does not apply to non-food special buy items, alcohol or national brands.  Read more here.

4. No store brands here (or very few of them).  This is one thing that people need to know about.  Aldi has it’s own brands (which are normally equally as good as, if not better than, the name brands).  This is one way they can offer such great prices.

*Bonus tip:  Look at the packaging and you may notice it looks similar to national brands.  That lets you know which one they are like, so you know what “name brand” product you are getting.

5. Forget the coupons! No coupons needed at Aldi, nor are they accepted.  The prices are often lower than what you will find at your local store, even with a coupon.  Of course, there are some sales at larger stores which are less than Aldi, so you do need to check your local ad and know the prices (when using your coupon), before you shop.

6. Spend less time in the store.  Without 10 brands of ketchup to look at and 47 boxes of cereal for your kids to look at, you can save time in the store.  There is one type of ketchup.  There are only a handful of cereals to look at.  It makes it so simple to just grab the item you need without having to compare per unit prices of various products.

*Bonus tip: Checkout is also quicker as all items have multiple bar codes on them. When the cashier grabs the product, they don’t have to turn the item to try to find the barcode.  In most cases, there is one on the item, no matter how they grab and slide it over the scanner.  This saves time when checking out too!

7. Organic or Gluten-Free?  Yes please!  This is one thing many do not realize.  Aldi has a huge selection of organic and even gluten-free foods!  They know that this is a concern for many families, so they have taken the steps to help you get those items you need – at a price you can afford!

8. No credit cards allowed! Another way that they keep prices low is that they do not accept credit cards.  There are processing fees attached to using them, so the stores have to pass along those charges, by raising the prices of food.  By accepting, debit, EBT or cash only, it keeps costs down.  If you are using the cash envelope system, this should not even be an issue for you.

9.  Know the store hours.  Aldi has shorter hours than most stores.  They do not open until 9 am and close at 8 pm.  They are open on Sunday as well, but the hours are 10 am – 7 pm.  This again keeps costs down as people work fewer hours and the operating costs are reduced (fewer lights needed when the store is closed).  You can head HERE to find a store near you, and confirm your local hours.

10. You can save 50% and more.  Try it and just see how your bill looks.  Even if you save $30 a week at the store, do the math – that is more than $1500 in a single year!!  I know I could find something fun to use $1500 on (or you could even use it to pay off your debts).  When I go to Aldi, it amazes me how much food I get for less than at my local grocery store.

Shopping at Aldi has become a norm for our family and has made a huge difference in our budget.  It amazes me how much grocery money we have left out of our budget – just by shopping here!

Aldi Shopping Tips: What You Should Buy

This post may contain affiliate links. Read my disclosure policy here.

If you have not ever shopped at Aldi you are missing out on amazing deals and ways to really knock down your grocery budget. If you are new to shopping there, you may not know which items you really try and which you may not want to grab. I've got a list of the items we ALWYAS buy at Aldi -- and the savings we realize is unbelievable! You've got to click over to get in on this list of the Must Buy Aldi Items!!!

In the past couple of years, I’ve learned more about Aldi Markets.  I always had a skewed perception of this store, so never shopped there.  However, that all changed back in the summer of 2011 when I hosted an ice cream party and shopped for everything at our local store.  I was pleasantly surprised at what they had to offer.  The prices — oh boy — the prices!  They beat just about everyone around on nearly everything.

We’ve tried many items during that time and have found out which items are the best bargain (and which items we pass on).  It amazes me how far my $50 can go there vs. what little I can get for the same amount at my local grocery store.

My family and I know have our “Aldi Staples” which are the items we get only there and no where else.  I stock up when  I hit the store because I know that my money will go further and my family will actually eat the items we buy!  Below is my Top 25 Aldi Items that I always buy there and no where else.

produce

You can find some great deals on produce, but you also need to carefully look it over.  There are times when it is a bit less than fresh, so you will want to pass.  Thankfully, most items are ripe and ready to take home.   Here are the items we always buy at Aldi:

  1. Pineapple
  2. Avacados
  3. Organic Bananas (watch for ripeness and eat accordingly)
  4. Lemons
  5. Limes
  6. Baby Carrots
  7. Peppers
  8. Strawberries
  9. Kiwi
  10. Mushrooms
  11. Baby lettuce in clam shell
  12. Squash

pantry

We find many of our household pantry items are the best bargain at Aldi.  We usually stock up on these items when we make our trip (just to save a return trip sooner than we need t0).  These items include:

  1. Noodles
  2. Canned vegetables
  3. Canned fruit
  4. Baking items: flour, sugar, brown sugar, baking soda, baking powder, spices, chocolate chips
  5. Breadcrumbs
  6. Natural peanut butter
  7. Cereal
  8. Vanilla extract (real – not imitation)
  9. Mustard
  10. Chicken broth
  11. Bread
  12. Tortillas

dairy

We find most of the refrigerated items are very good quality, however, you may want to try a one or two of each before you jump in and replace your regular brand, to make sure you like the flavor.  These are the items we always purchase.

  1. Cheesesticks
  2. Butter
  3. Shredded cheese (mozzarella and cheddar)
  4. Milk
  5. Eggs
  6. Salsa
  7. Cream cheese
  8. Almond milk
  9. Greek Yogurt
  10. Fresh mozzarella
  11. Pizzas (in the dairy and not the freezer)

frozen

Aldi has a great selection of frozen items.  You do want to read the labels before purchasing, but these are some of the items we normally buy:

  1. Ice cream
  2. Waffles
  3. Pancakes
  4. French Fries/Tater Tots
  5. Popsicles
  6. Pizza
  7. Berries
  8. Seafood (various – as in season)

snacks

We don’t purchase too many snacks or sweets at Aldi, but we have a few items that we toss into the cart each time we go.

  1. Tortilla chips
  2. Moser Roth chocolate bars
  3. Mini crackers with cheeze
  4. Fit & Active fruit snacks
  5. Fit & Active chocolate cookies
  6. Fit & Active S’mores drizzled mini crisps
  7. Penguin crackers
  8. Granola bars

meats

We do not buy much meat at Aldi, but that is because we get fresh meat from a butcher and put it in our freezer. However, we do find a few items at our local store and here is what we usually buy.

  1. Premium bacon (do not buy the lower priced packages as they are not as good)
  2. Jumbo hot dogs
  3. Ground turkey
  4. Frozen chicken nuggets

beverages

Another items we find at our store are beverages.  Having 3 kids, we do drink a fair amount of juice, but mostly water and milk.  We do splurge and find a few things there once in a while (and even alcoholic beverages).

  1. Organic bottled juice
  2. Bottled water
  3. Sangria (when in seaason)
  4. Domestic and imported beers (my hubby likes some of these)

household

We are pretty brand loyal with many of our household items, but there are things we still find at Aldi and grab when we need them.

  1. Paper plates
  2. Napkins
  3. Plastic silverware
  4. Aluminum foil (it is thinner, but works for keeping items warm in my kids’ lunches)
  5. Storage bags
  6. Paper towels
  7. Thick toilet paper (don’t get the thin – it is horrible)

So there you’ve got it!  My quick list of those most buy Aldi items!!  By shopping for these we have really made a difference in our budget as our money goes much further!  We still shop at other stores, but Aldi can usually fill the pantry and shelves with the basics – at a fraction of the cost!
