I’ve had many pets over the years. While most of them were not scared of fireworks, I will not forget my sweet little Afton who would shake and hide the minute that they started. I always felt so badly for him.
There are things you can do to for keeping pets calm during fireworks, storms and more! These included:
Keeping him inside — with me. I watched many fireworks shows from my front or back window. While I was disappointed that I was not outside with everyone else, I knew that he needed me to be there with him. Never once did we take him with us to any displays nor have him outside near us when we were setting off any fireworks.
Made sure his crate was accessible. We crated him during the day when we were at work. For him, his crate was a safe haven. In addition to being with me, I would move the crate into the room next to me and he would often climb inside where he felt safer from the noise.
Keep the windows closed. In order to limit the amount of noise he could hear, I would never have the windows open (of course, I always had the air conditioner running, so that was really not an issue). However, we also made sure that the front and back doors were closed completely, even though they had glass doors on them.
I also always placed a heavy blanket over the crate (excluding the door) to try to muffle the noise that he may hear.
Have him/her properly tagged. One year, we opened the door and the sounds frightened Afton so badly that he took off running. Fortunately for us, he ran directly to the neighbor’s house so we were able to find him. Had he gotten lost, he had the proper tags on him so that he could be returned to us.
The thing with my little guy was that it was not just fireworks. It was also thunderstorms. The minute that there was a loud crack, he would race down the hall to my bed. He would place his paws on the edge and I could always feel his entire body trembling. I would allow him to jump into my bed and he would climb under the covers and sleep by my feet – where he could not hear much and felt safer.
While these ideas often worked for my little guy, I know that is not the case for all pets. There are some which are so nervous during fireworks or storms that pet parents are often left wondering what more they can do. I always thought someone should invent something safe for dogs to eat to make them feel better.
I recently learned that there is such an item on the market! I have partnered with Heavenly Hounds to share this with you and to bring you an exclusive discount offer!
The people at Heavenly Hounds understand pets and their parents. Their mission was to create a product made from natural ingredients which helped furry friends when they needed it the most.
There have been recent studies which indicate that nearly 30% of the 80 million dogs in the US suffer from sort of fear or anxiety. Symptoms include panting, whining, drooling, trembling, scratching, hiding, chewing, panicking or relieving itself uncontrollably. Things that make us pet parents very sad.
After three years of research, Heavenly Hounds created something which will work. They sell a delicious peanut butter flavored square that your dog will LOVE! Our combination of natural ingredients (valerian root and passion flower) blended together becomes the perfect option for promoting relaxation and eliminating fear and anxiety in dogs.
Heavenly Hounds supports balanced behavior, promotes relaxation, reduces occasional hyperactivity and helps maintain contentment during separation (boarding), travel and tension caused by environmentally induced stresses such as storms, fireworks, holidays, etc.
