These DIY cash envelopes help keep your money in your wallet.
One of the best ways to really control spending and stay on track with a budget is to use the cash envelope system. This is the system I’ve used for years. The reason I use it is simple. It works.
I don’t keep all of my envelopes with me at all times. For one, I don’t like to carry that much cash in my purse. The other reason is that I don’t need the envelope unless I am going to that location. Envelopes such as clothing, haircuts and medicine stay at home.
Since I only have a couple of them with me, I like to keep them in my wallet. That means the envelope size makes a difference. Regular envelopes do not fit easily.
I had used the Dave Ramsey envelopes for years. Sadly, they stopped selling the loose envelopes. Instead of sweating it, I decided to create my own. This is much more cost effective – and I can print one any time it is needed.
DIY ENVELOPE TEMPLATE
I decided that I should share what I am using with others. Below you’ll find my DIY envelope template. Just click on the image and it will download to your computer.

Before you print it, I recommend you purchase card stock. Regular paper is just very flimsy and rips easily. Next, print out as many envelopes as you need for your various categories as you determined when you first got started using the envelope system.
Next, cut it out and then fold it along the dashed lines. Make sure you fold it so that you are folding on the outside of the lines rather than the inside. Otherwise, your , envelope may be a bit too small. Then, tape or glue the edges.
Place your cash inside and then write down your category. Finally, record your deposit on the outside and then, start to track your spending and current balance!
Now, I’m back up and running with our cash system. I’ve had some readers who do this same method electronically and just jot down their spending, which may also work. I find that for me, I do best when I have actual cash in my hand. It really “hurts” to hand over that green more than it does to swipe the plastic.
If you are like my family, now you too have a great free resource to keep track of your cash spending — all to help you gain more control of your finances!
We have a brand new colorful envelope template you may want to use instead!! It is pre-printed with some of the most popular categories and actually holds your cash a bit better than the original template above. (Note that the original template above will disappear on August 1, 2017).
