April is National Financial Literacy Month. As adults, most of us have learned quite a bit about finances (but probably admit we could learn even more). Are you taking the steps to help your children learn too? This month provides the perfect reason to do just that!
Teaching financial literacy to kids at a young age is a priority for famed investor and philanthropist, Warren Buffett. To make learning fun, Warren Buffett became an animated character in his own animated series, Warren Buffett’s Secret Millionaires Club, lending his image and voice to the television series created by Genius Brands International that offers tips to kids on practical money management.
As Mr. Buffett said in a Forbes interview, “It’s never too early to help kids understand about money. Whether it’s understanding the cost of the new toy they want, or the value of saving money. Kids are exposed to money matters from a very young age, so why not help them understand it and develop healthy habits early on?”
We actually received this DVD (geared for kids ages 6 – 11), so I could see what my kids thought. My kids each gave it a thumbs up! It wasn’t a cheesy movie – it was very well done! One of my kids’ favorite ones was about business. They know that mom has her own business, so they seemed to relate to that one very well.
While they talk about the importance of running a business (location, marketing, etc), the most important lesson that they teach is balance. You can’t give 100% of yourself to everything and so sometimes, you have to let something go so that you can focus on what matters. The best part of this lesson was that the young girl knew that her school work and her friends were more important than trying to help everyone out with everything. She found the balance and showed that it made her feel better to just let go of those things and focus more on what mattered most of all. I appreciated that they end every episode with an important reminder: “The best investment you can make is an investment in yourself!”
You can visit Secret Millionires Club on line with your own kids. There you will find webisodes, games and more – all to help them learn more about finances and life lessons. You can also purchase items such as the DVDs and book.
We have so much to teach our children, with finances being just one thing. I know I appreciate all of the tools and resources available to help my husband and I teach our own children. Not only has this DVD provided some great tips, I also previously shared a post about How to Teach Children Financial Responsibility. This is one more tool you can use to help educated your children.
Whatever you do, just make sure you do not forget the importance of teaching your children this important life skill.
