When it comes to be prepared for things which might happen, we all think about the important legal documents and financial aspect, but how often do we think about what lives in our computers? How many of you download photos to yours? Do you have other documents, forms or more sitting on your harddrive? What would you do if yours crashed? It is not fun. It happened to me – twice within 6 weeks.
Yep. One day I was working along just fine on my computer and the next second, my computer wouldn’t turn on. My harddrive crashed. Fortunately, I had noticed it was acting up and quickly downloaded photos, emails and other items to a flash drive and another computer. However, had I not had that warning, I’d have been hosed. And actually – I was. I replaced the harddrive and not 6 weeks later, the new one also crashed. Fortunately for me, I didn’t have too many new items on the computer which were lost forever. I didn’t want to risk losing those items again.
Even though I use Dropbox for my photos now, I still have a LOT of data on my computer — including our finances for Quicken and the like. There are documents, forms and other items which I just can’t afford to recreate should my computer crash. The minute I got my new computer, I signed up for Mozy and I’ve never looked back.
What I love about using this service, as opposed to my own harddrive, is that this is stored somewhere other than my home. If my house were lost due to fire or other disaster, my hard drive would probably go along with it. Now, whether my computer crashes or something worse happens, my information will be recoverable.
I really don’t think I can put a price on the loss of data. However, Mozy is really affordable and well worth the fee. I pay around $50 a year for this service. It updates all of my files. Every. Single. Day. I just pretty much set it and don’t worry about it. It just does it all for me!
