Walgreens Rewards Program: Kansas City is a Test Market!

I know that so many of you use CVS’s Extra Care Bucks (basically rewards) program and love it.  Well, Walgreens is introducing one too, that is called Walgreens Rewards!!  This program starts on May 9th – just a couple of days away.

The only stipulation is that right now, they are testing it in only some markets.  Those include:

* Kansas City, MO
* Richmond, VA
* Portland, OR

It looks like this card will work similar to CVS and other cards in some ways, but has it’s own unique perks as well.  Here’s what the card can do for you:

* Get Members only savings emailed to you
* Earn 10 points for every dollar spent + 100 points for each prescription that you fill
* Rewards are issued in the form of Walgreens Rewards Certificates, gift cards or merchandise.

One feature that I really found interesting is that if you and your spouse each have a card (that is allowed), you can actually LINK your cards and combine your points.  Nothing more frustrating than sending your hubby for something to have dollars on his card vs. yours.

Once you reach 2,000 points, you can redeem them for your certificate or other items — or carry foward to redeem at a later date.   You will instantly get 500 points credited to your account when you sign up.  You can also choose to print out a certificate and pick up your card in the store, or have it mailed to you.

As far as the various rewards you can receive, right now, they include:

$5.00 Rewards Certificate (like cash at WAGS)
Various Retailer Gift Cards (such as Amazon.com, Macy’s & Starbucks)
Various items such as electronics, housewares and more

Keep in mind that this is a new program and I am going to learn right beside you.   I would also be patient with Walgreens and it’s clerks/managers since they are learning this program as well.

If you live in one of the test market cities, head on over here and get signed up and read the FAQs and other information to help answer your questions.

Thanks Lisa & I Heart WAGS!

    Is it just on the MO side, or the KS side as well? That is cool, I wonder how it will go over. I know people that prefer Walgreens because you do not have to have a card… I on the other hand prefer CVS because their ECB always print out without problem!

      It should be KC Metro. I don’t live in KC proper and was able to sign up. All you can do is try to sign up and if your zip code is rejected, you’ll know for sure.

    I hope they do this across the country. I love CVS a lot more because they don’t run out of the great deals as fast since it is limited 1 per card and their ECBs are good a month instead of two weeks like Walgreen’s RR.

    • Tracie says

      That is what I think they hope to do Ashlee. We get to “help” work out the bugs for them before they release it nationwide.

    I’m not sure if I will love this or not. I like CVS’s card but its nice not having a card to track you when there are some hot deals! I don’t clear the shelfs but I do make several trips in one week for the MM and Free stuff if its really good.

    Thanks for the heads-up! I found this out by accident a couple of weeks ago when a cashier mentioned it at the 75th and Metcalf store.

    I’m with Jennifer S on this one, we’ll just need to wait and see. All things change so if they do limit you, oh well, it was nice while it lasted.

    p.s. I signed up with zip code 66212 (Overland Park) – I printed off the sign-up form which you can bring to the store and they’ll give you a card immediately which you can then use in the store at that time, as Tracie mentioned.

    I didn’t see that either. I haven’t yet tried to use my card yet — I elected for it to be mailed to me. Sounds like this is part of the learning curve….but I think that if that is case, I know I won’t use it. I don’t buy their store products.

    Do you think it’ll ever be like the ECBs at CVS so they aren’t using the stupid RR? I was disappointed to still see RRs everywhere in the ad this week, so it was a major letdown because I was hoping those would go away, or at least be converted to be like ECBs and generated by your card, but no such luck so far.

    I did read in the ad that as of 5/30 the sale prices would only be available with your card, so maybe it’ll be a slow transition and will be more like ECBs eventually?

      I don’t know how it will work exactly….it is going to be a learning game for all of us. I have my coupon here to get my card and am going to go into the store this week and try it out. I am also going to ask a lot of questions and see if I can’t get answers for all of us as well.
