Walgreens: Rewards System Coming To An End!! (Finally!!!)

It looks like those of us living in the Test Market have a little present coming our way!!!  On January 31, 2012, the Walgreens Rewards system (aka Test Market) will be ending!!!!    That means, that if you have any points accumulated, you will need to cash them in by that time, or you will just lose them altogether.  And no – they are not launching nationwide.  Walgreens is scrapping the entire program.

As a reminder, people who live in Kansas City, Portland and Richmond have been involved in a test market where points were redeemed in lieu of Register Rewards since May 2010.  Needless to say, it has not worked well.  Time and time again, the value of the points was no where close to that of the Register Rewards being earned in other parts of the country.

We’d all been hoping and praying that this would be coming to an end and it is finally happening!  This was all confirmed today at a local Kansas City Walgreens.  The cashier shared a letter from corporate advising these stores that the would be discontinuing the program.  Looks like Christmas came a little early this year for some of us!

Thanks for the heads up, Learning to Be Frugal!

That IS good news! I’ve always been disappointed that Kansas City was in the test market, and I am so glad that it will be ending. The points were confusing and frusterating. I much prefer to get Register Rewards. Thanks for the pick-me-up!

Hurray!! I called customer service a few weeks ago because I didn’t get credited for some bonus points I should have received. The CSR said they were running behind in crediting rewards because “this program has been so wildly popular.” I had to chuckle at her comment, because it sure hasn’t been popular in my view.

I hear that all of the time from them – and I kindly correct them that it is not and that most people hate it. LOL!

this comes from a letter sent to a store? and the points have to be used by 1-31 or we lose them? wow that’s lame, when were they going to tell us ?

    • Tracie says

It just came out a couple of days ago so it has been shared publicly. They will tell everyone, but they had to let the stores know first to make sure all of the managers and cashiers were aware before it was shared publicly. You will not yet find this in print from Walgreens….but it is coming.

YEAH!! I was never “fortunate enough” to experience it (HA!!) & so thankful I won’t!! I guess I can though my notes away I made about it!!

Awesome! Any idea if we will have rewards as showing in the black Friday previews (2 pages of free items!)… Or will we be stuck with points?

I just heard this last night at the pharmacy!!!!!!!!! YIPPEEEEEEE

The poor fella couldn’t understand why I was so happy.

Tracey – as bad as it was (is) I want to thank you for going the extra mile and figuring out test market points for us each week. I learned early on it was useless to try to look at other sites that didn’t include that since almost all of the RR were actually points for us.

Just an FYI – I’m an employee at Walgreens and while the program is coming to an end, it’s only briefly. They’re cutting off the pilot program as they get ready to roll out the card nationwide. The good news though is that they are completely scrapping the bonus points in the new card program, it will essentially be like the CVS card where you just use it to get your sale prices. So yes, the current program is ending forever, but there will be a nationwide rollout of a new Walgreens card coming towards the end of next year but no more bonus points!

    • Tracie says

Thanks Brandy! The points is the problem that we all had with the program. So I think if there is a nationwide card that’s good – just can the points! LOL!!

I rarely shop at walgreens, So currently Kansas city walgreens are not participating in Register rewards? I was not aware of this and recently have planned a trip with register rewards. I’m guessing it’s gonna be a no go , huh?

Most of the current RR deals are not coming up here. It really is hit or miss if you go. Just check the sales flyer before you head out to know if you will get RR or points.
