WINNERS (emailed on 8/22/14 – prize mailed same day):
Summer is rapidly drawing to a close. That means it is time for back to school, sports and so much more. What better way to celebrate than with an end of summer party with your family and friends? We did just that this past weekend. The best part of all was that we were able to host more than 10 people – and spent around $100 on EVERYTHING!
We were able to pick up:
- Cheese Brats
- Hot Dogs
- Hot dog and hamburger buns
- 3 types of chips
- 4 different ice cream treats
- Adult Beverages (4 different kinds)
- Fresh Veggies
- Veggie Dip
- …… and more!
And we spent just around $100!! How did we do this? By shopping at one of my favorite stores — ALDI!!
There are a lot of misnomers about this great store. I will admit that I actually use to be one of them. That is until I gave the store a chance and learned what they had to offer! Here are some common misconceptions:
All items are not name brand and will taste bad. While ALDI has it’s own brands, it actually does sometimes offer store brand items. The store brands might look differently, but many times (from my personal experience), the items taste the same as (if not better than) the more expensive name brands. One item is crackers. If we need to pick them up at the grocery store, they run around $3.99 a box. We can pick up the same size product for $1.49 at ALDI. The best part of all is that they taste the same. We honestly can not tell a difference.
ALDI doesn’t have healthy foods. This is not true! ALDI offers fresh produce – which is much less expensive too. We picked up a whole pineapple for $1.99 at ALDI when the same item was $4.99 at our local store! Not only that, they also offer many gluten free, organic and natural products. You just have to take a minute to look through the store and see what you can’t find.
I can’t use a credit card there. This is actually not true either. You can now use a card, however, you will have to pay a small processing fee.
I have to pay for my shopping cart. Yes and no. You do have to put a quarter into a slot to unlock the cart, but you get that back when you return the cart to the store. Or, you can do what I do, and just pay it forward and hand your cart over to someone else and give them a free shopping trip!
I can not use coupons there, which makes the deals at my store better. ALDI does not accept coupons, but that is because most of the items they carry do not have them, and they are actually priced well enough that you don’t even need coupons to get the same deals (or better) than you would at your local store. Of course, you do need to watch your local ads as there are times when you can find a better deal on a sale item when using a coupon.
We fixed up a huge spread for our friends and the only thing we asked them to bring was — themselves. ALDI put on this party for us! We were able to enjoy some great food and when we told them that everything was from ALDI, they were surprised. They were even more shocked when we told them how much we spent. They couldn’t believe that the food was the quality it was at the price we paid. I think we might have turned a few of them onto shopping at ALDI!
My husband was probably the most shocked and I’m not sure if it was because the food tasted so well, or that we did all of this on such a low budget. Needless to say, he’s already told me to make sure that all of our weekly trips to the store include one to ALDI!
