Each week day, I share another company that you can email to thank them for their product (or let them know of your concerns as necessary). Most of the time we end up getting thank you emails. Sometimes, they send coupons for discounts or even free products. Occasionally, the company really steps up and does something incredible as was the case for reader Jennifer. Here is here story:
I wanted to share an Apple a Day story with you. It’s a local company in PA, but it was a great response. They have the best diet iced tea. I got a couple of gallons and they tasted watered down. I emailed the company, simply asking if they had changed their recipe. This was my email to them:
I am an AVID drinker of “YOUR PRODUCT”. I used to bring multiple gallons home when visiting relatives in PA, which is where I got hooked. I have been able to purchase at the newer xxxxxxxx now in Dover, De. I was disappointed in my last two purchases of gallons of “YOUR PRODUCT”. They taste watered down. Has the recipe changed or did I just get two in a bad batch? I still will continue to purchase, was just wondering if something was changed. Thanks!
Their response was:
Hi Jennifer. We did not change the recipe. Do you know what the sell by dates were on the containers you bought? If you could let me know, that would be helpful. I will have a refund sent to you. Thanks, Mike.
I emailed them back with the sell by dates were. Two days later in the mail, I received a CASH refund from them with a letter of apology and a refrigerator magnet with their logo on it. I wasn’t expecting to receive anything, I was just wondering if the recipe had changed.
I share her story with all of you to let you know that it works to speak up. She was so polite and wasn’t demanding anything from them. She simply asked a question and look at the response she received. Make sure that you do your own Apple A Day emails on products you use as well – you never know the response.
If you are new to the site, you will find an Apple a Day link each week day to help you know who to contact. You can find out all of the details about Apple a Day (which is also a master list of the companies, links and coupons received). You’ll find the link posted each afternoon right here on Penny Pinchin’ Mom!

I had that same thing happen to me with Del Monte green beans. They tasted like they had no flavor at all so I asked if they somehow changed the way of making them and they said they hadn’t and then sent me a check for $5!

I think I know what company in PA that email was from and I wanted to say they are awesome in their customer service. I contacted them about whether I could buy their decaf diet iced tea in 5 gallon drums (joking but seriously I drink it like crazy) and they sent me coupons and every year I get a calendar from them with more coupons.

I think I know the company too. They recently sent me a ton of great coupons and a handwritten note, and I’ve gotten calendars from them with coupons too.

I had a similar experience with a brand of tomato sauce. It didn’t taste right, so I wrote a letter (this was in the days before e-mail) to the company. I was SHOCKED when the vice president of the company (!!!!) actually called me, apologized, and then sent me a batch of coupons. To this day, I am loyal to that brand of sauce! 🙂

I also wrote to Drake’s once because I got 2 boxes of Yodels that tasted awful! They sent a letter of apology and coupons for several free boxes (all of which tasted great, by the way).
I also write to companies when we like their products and usually get coupons back, so don’t write just to complain! 🙂
