All 3 of my kids have a blanket. All of them need it to sleep at night. With all of the “love” they get, these poor blankies are just falling apart. I can’t even count the number of times I’ve had to repair my daughters’ blanket. It is now almost past the point of repair. We have talked to her about putting it in a box so she can keep it forever. She just can’t as she has such strong ties to it. In fact, the minute she is upset, she uses it and it seems to calm her down and consoles her. For her, it truly is a security blanket. Check out this poor tattered blanket:
I recently learned about a child psychologist here in the Kansas City area who wrote a book for her own son. It shares the story of a boy who has had a security blanket since he was a baby, which helps him go to sleep. As he grows, the blanket begins to fall apart into bits and he grieves the loss of his beloved Blankie. His grandmother sews it up as much as possible and his mother gives him a special box in which to keep the bits. At the end, the boy has become a grandfather pictured “someday” with his granddaughter reminiscing with her about his Blankie.
What I admire is the lengths that Christie Bostwick, the author, went through to get this book published. She felt so strongly that it could truly help kids learn how to grieve the loss of his or her blankie. After many rejection letters, she decided to take action herself. She actually entered it into the 2014 Indie Book Awards where it was one of four finalists! Impressive!
She then took it one step further and wanted to have the book and package created — with all USA materials! She is using a publisher in St. Louis. She uses a mill in South Carolina, who produces the fabric to make the My Blankie Bits Blankies® which match the one you see in the book (included with each book). She is using a third generation packaging company in Parsons, KS to make the box which also matches the book! The most awesome part of all is that the blankets themselves are cut and sewn right here in Kansas City by single moms of Operation Breakout (employed by another woman owned company, Weave Gotcha Covered).
Her perseverance is amazing to me! She knew that this was an item which could truly help so many children! She did not give up. She kept going when others told her no. Now, she is hitting the market with her amazing product – and you are learning about it here!
You can actually purchase one for yourself! There are 3 different options available:
