Recently, my son finished reading some of the books we had for him. He told me he wanted to read some new ones, but wanted them to be “big kid books.” In kid-speak, that means chapter books.
I asked my friends for some recommendations of books for 8 – 12 year old boys and girls. They came up with some great ideas! Even his current teacher came up with a few ideas, which were perfect for him.
I want to share these ideas for you too with you too! That way, if your son (or favorite 9 – 11 year old boy) is looking for new books to read, some of these might be the perfect solution.
Pokemon Go! Chapter Books
This series is all about the ever popular (again) Pokemon Go! They are action packed books filled with kids’ favorite Pokemon characters.
Magic Tree House
The Magic Tree House series are books my oldest daughter also loved. They are filled with history and adventure. She would get lost in these books for hours on end (and now my son does as well). As of the time of this post there are 52 books in this series.
Land of Stories
Your kids will enjoy Land of Stories books. This series can be referred to as a modern day fairy tail. Kids go on magical adventures all over the world. You may want to check out each book to make sure it is age appropriate (some may not be well suited for younger kids).
House of Robots
These books are about a robot who joins a fifth grade class! House of Robots books are filled with adventure and lots of laughs.
Percy Jackson & The Olympians
There are currently 5 books in the Percy Jackson & The Olympians series. These books combine a bit of mythology and adventures for kids of all ages.
Harry Potter
We owned the Harry Potter books for years. However, it wasn’t until my daughter was 11 that she was interested. These books are very long, but thrilling and exciting.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid
Both of my kids have absolutely LOVED Diary of a Wimpy Kids books! They read every single one of them (more than once). The books are about a young boy and the perils of elementary and middle school.
The Big Nate Books are from the same author as Diary of a Wimpy Kid – Jeff Kinney. These are also about a young boy and his crazy life. These are written in a comic book layout, so keep that in mind.
There are several books in the Boy/Girl Battle series. The books are about neighbors — families of boys and also girls – who make life a little difficult for the opposite gender. Definitely lots of fun to read.
Treasure Hunters
The title of these books pretty much tells kids that it is going to be an adventure series! There are two books in the Treasure Hunters series and kids love the fun and intrigue they find in the pages.
My Weird School Daze
The Weird School Daze books are about the adventures of third graders. Full of lots of laughs and fun for any kid.
