I love flowers. I love when the warm weather brings them with it. Living in the midwest, though, winter seems to last forever! These DIY Floral Letters are the perfect way to bring the outdoors inside for year round blooms! These letters are so easy to make!
You will need:
8″ Paper Mache Letters
Glue Gun
Glue Sticks
Flowers
Scissors
String (optional)
Once you have your letters, or word, picked out (We found our letters at Hobby Lobby. They are regularly $2.99, but if you watch for sales, like we did, you can get them for 50% off – which makes them only $1.50 each!) you’re ready to start cutting flowers and gluing.
Tip: If you don’t want to glue as many flowers, you can brush or spray paint over the letters in a floral color (like pink or yellow) first, and allow it to dry before you begin applying the flowers. I chose not to do this, because I was going to fully cover them in floral anyway.
As you can see, I cut the flowers off their stem as close to the flower itself as possible. If you leave a bit of plastic on the flower, it will help it stay better. Put a decent size bead of glue on the bottom of the flowers and begin gluing. Seriously, there is no pattern to this. Just glue the flower, press it on the paper mache letter for about ten seconds, and then move on to the next one. To help keep my sizes and colors spaced evenly, I glued on my largest sized flowers first, and made sure to split them up by flower type and color. After that, I filled in with medium size flowers, and lastly the smallest size.
Normally I am an advocate for using high quality fake floral, because otherwise it makes your finished project look cheap. In this case, buy the dollar store flowers! I used flowers I found at Walmart for $0.97 a bunch, and they were perfect for this project! See how I am pressing these flowers into each other? Do not be afraid to smash the flowers into each other to make sure your letters look full – it will give your final product a much better look. If you add a flower, and later don’t like the placement of it, just pull it off! That’s the great thing about using hot glue on these letters, it’s easy to remove and replace flowers as needed.
Once you’re finished applying flowers to your letters, you can hot glue a bit of ribbon or string to the back so you can hang them on a wall, or you can leave them as is, and place them on a shelf. I chose the word, “Joy” and placed them in my laundry room…probably because I need to be reminded to choose joy most often in that room – haha! What word would you choose? We would love to see pictures of your creations!
