I have a confession to make. I am a bad mom. Well, maybe bad is too strong a word. I am a “put myself last” mom. Better? Each fall, I take the time to make sure that each of my children receive a flu shot and ask my husband to make sure that he does the same. I don’t want any of them to get sick at all during the winter months. Sadly, like most moms, I forget to make myself do the same thing.
It seems to be the thing for a lot of moms. We do so much to take care of our families that we tend to forget that the best thing we can do for them is to take care of ourselves! I’ve been working on this area for a while now and decided that one thing I needed to do was to make sure that I too got my flu shot this year. I wanted to make sure that my friend (and assistant) Ally did the same thing. Neither of us can afford to be sick this winter as our families both rely on us for so much (that and it just flat out sucks to get sick).
This past Friday, I set up a date for the two of us. We first met at CVS Minute Clinic and signed up to receive our flu shots. Contrary to what our children may believe, mom’s do not like being pricked by needles anymore than their children do. I decided that I would go first:
I had never ever, in my entire life, received a flu shot. I wasn’t sure how painful it would be (as I’ve received a few in my life time that hurt like $*@(%#)! It really wasn’t bad. I think feeling the medicine go in hurt more than the needle itself.
Once I finished, it was Ally’s turn. She was also not looking forward to it — but agreed that it really didn’t hurt at all!
Now, when you are a kid and get a flu shot, all you can keep your eye on is the prize — the lollipop. As much as I love sweets, my rear end certainly does NOT need anything added to it. That’s what is great about CVS! The have their own “sweet” as in a “sweet deal’!” When you receive a flu vaccine, you will receive a voucher good for 20% off of your purchase (read the coupon for exclusions). The coupon is good through March 31, 2013 — so plenty of opportunities to redeem yours!
Ally and I were able to make something fun out of something that is, well, less than fun! We did it together, got a coupon and then ended our outing by going out to lunch together. And, when you are a mom, it is a great reward to actually go to lunch without kids asking you to cut up their meal, asking for more to drink, spilling the drink or wanting to go to the bathroom —- again. Yep, we had a great time on our Mom’s Day Out — why don’t you do the same?
Penny Pinchin’ Mom received two flu shot vouchers to try their clinic. They did not request a blog post in exchange, that was done of my own accord. The opinions contained within that post are my own and were not influenced by anyone.
