I recently was contacted by The Motherhood, on behalf of Libby’s, about participating in their Get Back to the Table initiative. With family being the most important thing in my life, I immediately said yes and jumped in with both feet to help. On September 30th, I met up with several other local bloggers and Hannah Keely at a The Farmhouse where we all shared tips on what we do to help our families stay at the table and enjoy dinner. Some of those included:
* Serve everything family style
* Have a topics jar
* Stay unplugged
* Try using toothpicks or fun tableware to make dinnertime more fun
While chatting was great – what was MORE fun was the fact that we actually were able to help 30 local families to also get back to the table too! We put together dinner kits and donated them to Hillcrest Transitional Housing, to give to the families that they are helping to get back on their feet – I thought we couldn’t have selected a more appropriate charity if we had tried! I love when women come together as they have such great ideas and can make things WORK.
We put our kits together in assembly line format and when we were finished, here was the fruits of our labor:
We were able to give every family the following:
Ziploc Containers courtesy of Penny Pinchin Mom and Kansas City Mamas
Measuring Cups & Spoons courtesy of KC Metro Moms
Votive Candles & Coupon Organizers from Eat From Your Pantry
Red Plates (one person who had a great day or event gets the red plate that night) courtesy of SuperJenn
Chatter Box (box filled with discussion topic ideas) from Dine & Dish
Mixing Bowls courtesy of My Kansas City Mommy
We also were able to give each family 10 Libby’s Food products, some recipes and a reusable shopping tote! Loading up those bags and knowing that it was helping so many families, made me so proud to know that my site, and what I am doing, provided me with the opportunity to help so many other families.
Sadly, many families still will go without. So, Libby’s is working on another project where they are donating to help Feed America’s Hungry. I too have started a Penny Pinchin’ Mom donation site and would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to be able to help even more by donating $500 to this project. In fact – if you – my readers help me reach $400 – I’ll pitch in the last $100 myself! You can read more about that here.
