So begins the final days of January. I just can’t believe the month is already gone. It flew right by, but on the positive side – I feel like the month was not wasted. I actually accomplished so much! My to do lists and goals were knocked out each week – thanks to taking the time to write them down. There is just something about seeing them in print that keeps me motivated and on track to achieve them.
While I did get a lot taken care of this past week, I also felt my stress level rising due to many things I needed to get done. They weren’t on my list, but they kept taunting me from the back of my mind. It really got me down and bothered me. Then, I went to church and I read something in our weekly bulletin. It just really moved me and had such meaning to me that I wanted to share it with all of you.
A professor was teaching his students when he held up a glass of water. He asked them all “How much does this glass weigh?” Of course, there were several guesses by many students – but they were not the correct answer.
He told them that what the glass weighs on the scale does not matter. Even the lightest item can become heavy if held too long. He shared that if he held the glass for an five minutes, he would be fine. If he held onto it for an hour, he may have a sore arm. However, if he held it for 24 hours, he might need medical assistance to remove the glass and help with the pain he would experience.
So goes too stress. The longer you hold onto it, the more it can hurt. And it isn’t just psychological hurt – it can actually be felt physically. When something stresses you, try to walk away for a while. Read a book. Play with your kids. Do something that is not related at all to what is causing your stress. You just might returned with renewed focus and determination and quickly take care of the situation and eliminate the stress completely.
This really hit home for me. After reading this, I tried it. I did not even pick up the item that caused me the stress I was feeling. I walked away completely. I played with my kids. I watched a movie (Lean on Me) and just relaxed. Now, as I am getting ready to plan my week, this item will go onto this week’s list. The amazing thing is that I have some great ideas on how to make it go simpler and save myself some aggravation. By George – it worked! So, if you feel stress this week yourself – why not give this idea a try. You just might succeed!
