Letter G
We are continuing with our series on how to save on groceries — even if you don’t have a coupon! Â These items below are things we need, and we purchase, even if we don’t have a coupon or one is never available. Â Here are a few food items, beginning with the letter “G” which you can purchase in bulk when you find a great deal!
You can easily store grapes when you find a great deal:
- Grapes are good for up to a week after purchase. Â Keep them in a perforated bag and do not wash until ready to consume.
- Freezing grapes is simple. Â Â Wash and remove the stems. Â Warm about 2 3/4 cups of sugar and 4 cups of water and bring to a boil, cool the syrup and pour it over the grapes and then freeze.
- You can also freeze grapes without the syrup to use for snacking or to use in jams/or jellies — just wash and remove the stems and freeze.
- When frozen grapes and last up to one year.
Canned Green Beans have a shelf life of up to 18 months unopened. Â However, check the Best if Use By Date printed on the can for optimum freshness.
Fresh green beans can be easily stored
- Consume within 5 days from purchase.
- You can freeze them by washing and removing the stems. Â Blanch them (drop in boiling water for 3 minutes) and then drop into ice cold water immediately. Â Dry and place into freezer bags or storage containers.
- Frozen beans can last anywhere from 12 – 18 months in the deep freeze.
When it comes to ground beef, you can absolutely buy in bulk and save!
- Ground beef should be cooked within 1 – 2 days from being placed into your refrigerator.
- Freeze it immediately after purchase in freezer safe bags or containers.
- If you purchase in bulk, you can break into smaller sizes (i.e. 1 lb packages).
- If you plan to freeze it for longer than 2 months, wrap in foil or heavy duty wrap/containers to prevent freezer burn.
- When frozen, it can last 3 – 4 months (sometimes longer).
Grits can be purchased and stored in a dry, cool location for up to one year. Â Just make sure they are stored in an air tight container or baggie.
