Hey everyone, thanks for joining me for this week’s Friday Finance with Josh. Usually, I’m here to give you tips about how you can make your financial position better, and today is no different. As a matter of fact, today I’m going to give you the biggest tip I’ve ever given you. But, before I do, I want you to know that this is a post about current political issues, mainly the government shutdown. I might piss some of you off with this one, that’s not my goal. My goal is to come up with a way to start a change in a major issue that will soon have an affect on us all.
New Developments Are A Bit Scary!
So, GOP members and the President have begun discussions about raising the debt ceiling, but they are not talking about opening the government and putting 800,000 furloughed government employees back on the job. The bottom line is, if we don’t pay our debts, it will send the world into a world recession. The big guys in government wouldn’t want that because they’re investors and business owners. But, it’s OK, to keep furloughed employees out of work because that won’t have as drastic of an affect on their personal agendas! Their investment accounts! Our elected government is showing us that they don’t care about the 800,000 US citizens they’ve laid off as much as they care about the stock market!
However, I can say one good thing about this. If they didn’t start discussions and they weren’t or are not able to come up with a way to pay investors come the 17th, it could trigger a worldwide recession or depression! That would be good for no one! So, it’s a good thing that the members of GOP and the President are starting to talk like adults instead of acting like 12 year old boys in a Congress cat fight!
What It Really Means To Have 800,000 Government Employees Laid Off
We all know that most national parks are closed. That sucks for our community and the tourists that come to visit us. But, that’s not the only problem. One of the departments that is shut down is W.I.C. (Women Infants and Children). This department is the department that subsidizes nutritious food for women infants and children. While Congress is fighting about shutting down the house gym, we’ve got tons of women infants and children that rely on this subsidy for nutrition and aren’t getting it!
Another office that was closed is the department that files unemployment claims. So, if you’re laid off during this shutdown, you’re out of luck. Imagine how much money is being taken out of our economy each and every day that the government shutdown persists.
Now let’s get to the biggest of big deals. We have 800,000 newly unemployed consumers out there. That’s a lot of money out of our economy! Not to mention these poor people need to find a way to get a job because unemployment won’t cover all of their bills!
The truth is, I could list negative effects of the government shut down until my fingers fall off. The bottom line is, every day that it is shut down, more and more money is being sucked out of the U.S. economy. As money is slowly sucked out of our economy, markets will begin to show signs, even if we pay all of our debts by the 17th.
We Need To Work Together To Change This
The government shutdown has not had a major effect on the economy YET, but if we as consumers, as citizens don’t hold our elected government’s feet to the fire, it will! It is up to us to make a change and that’s obvious. Just look at what it took to get our government to just sit and talk to eachother. We are looking at a world wide economic collapse and their fighting like little boys…it’s sickening!
Let’s make it stop. Don’t forget, elected officials are just that, they’re elected by us, their bosses. If they don’t do their job well, we fire them come the next election! That being said, we should all be on twitter, writing a letter or on the phone calling our congress representatives and telling them that if they don’t fix what’s happening, and fix it fast, they will be looking for new jobs next time we vote.
Also, President Obama is on his second term. That means, as far as the election goes, he’s not going to be running. But, we can write him letters too, and we should! We should tell him that we are disgusted with his leadership through this process. We should remind him of the almost millions of laid off employees and countless people that his and Congress’ idiotic moves are affecting. We should tell him that he will go down in history as one of the worst presidents our country has ever had if he doesn’t do something to become a real leader and fix this problem.
It’s good we’re working on paying off debts. Knowing our government lately, we know working on it doesn’t necessarily mean it will get done, but at least they’re working on it. The bad thing is, there are two parts to the issue, there is the debt limit and the government shutdown. Each of these issues is a major one! If our President and elected members of Congress want to act like little boys, we need to do what we can to give them a spanking and get them on the right track!
