One question I hear over and over again is “How can I get more copies of the inserts each week without having to buy so many subscriptions?” There are a few ways that you can get them – some of which require you to get a little creative! But, when it comes to saving money, it can be worth it.
Dollar Store. One little known resource is your local dollar store. Stores such as Dollar General, Family Dollar and Dollar Tree sell the Sunday newspaper for — well – $1!! This is an easy way to pick up a few more sets of inserts for a really good price.
You can also ask friends, family or even your neighbors to save their inserts for you. Many people don’t actually clip coupons. That means they aren’t even interested in that part of the newspaper. A few phone calls and you might have more than your fair share of inserts each week.
Check the Library for coupon boxes. Many libraries have baskets of coupons available. You can take in the coupons you don’t need and can find a few that you can use. Many times you won’t find full inserts here, but most of the time, you don’t want the entire insert anyhow. So, you can take in those few you’ve got left and may find those 3 or 4 great coupons you are dying to add to your collection.
Watch the recycling bin. You can check out recycling centers or even watch the curbside recycling boxes for inserts. So often, people toss these out, so you might find them just sitting there, waiting to be reused again. Keep in mind that you might find some coffee grounds or spilled pickle juice on them. But the good news is that they still save money whether they are stained or not!
Purchase them directly. If you are really interested in additional coupons and these aren’t options for you, you can always purchase just the coupons you really want by visiting The Coupon Clippers. Here, you can find those coupons that you didn’t get in your inserts or even pick up a few more of those you know you really would love to use. The coupons cost mere pennies (plus postage) – but it can be worth it in the end.
Inserts Only subscriptions. You might check with your local newspaper to see if they have any special offers available. I subscribe to the Belton Star Herald where I live. As a bonus, they offer a FREE Sunday newspaper with our paid subscription. That means FREE INSERTS every Sunday morning on my driveway!
So, what have YOU done to get additional coupon inserts? I’m sure that there are even more ways out there than what I’ve listed. Please share with all of us!

I also stop by the Walmart customer service desk on Sundays when I go shopping…they always have a STACK of different inserts you can pick up!

I always go to the dollar tree for my papers! I am going to have to look for the coupon bins at my local library and see if they do it!

Call your local newspaper on Monday and ask them if you can have any of the coupon inserts from their leftover papers.

I used to buy newspapers, but they’re just not worth it since I want coupons in bulk. I considered your other ideas (recycling center, etc), but last year I settled on using online coupon services. I always know what I need to replenish in my stockpile (currently only dishwashing liquid), so for example as soon as I see what the Wednesday sales are and if Dawn is on sale, I check the online services to see what they’ve got. If I find some, I buy a lot of coupons as well as looking for other coupons with long expiration dates I should be able to use for other products I’ll need later. Minimum sale is usually $5, and both services I use get them to me prior to the following Wed when the sale expires.
It’s far cheaper than newspapers and I don’t have to waste gas driving to the recycling center, perhaps in bad weather, and spend some time scrounging.

Hi Eric, I’m in WA and am curious about the online coupon services. Which ones do you use and are they local to you or national? Thanks!
Tracie says
I’ve used The Coupon Clippers – they are National and so you can get those coupons that maybe weren’t in your own weekly insert.

Thanks, Tracie!

The recycling center is my favorite place, where I can find the funny sections still in bundles, full of inserts! I also work at a retirement home where the recycling bins are always a good source of inserts.

The Examiner offers a free KC star on Sunday with a subscription to their paper. They also have some inserts included with their Saturday issue.

Lee’s Summit Journal subscription will get you a KC Star Sunday paper free. I also get a coupon insert once a week with the Journal so it’s cheaper than buying the Sunday paper even at $1 each. If I remember right the LS Journal is $48 a year and extra coupons!
Erica says
Kim, the Dollar Tree’s in KC have them for $1 each.
Tracie, the Belton Star Herald has coupons? All of them? I saw the Cass County one carried the P&G coupons but not the others. If that’s the case, I’m switching because they’re paper is cheaper than the KC Star.
Tracie says
Erica – when you purchase the Belton Star Herald, you get a free Kansas City Start with your paid subscription- so you can get free coupons. I buy a subscription too, so I get 2 KC Stars on Sunday (so like 50% cost for each).

Our local Dollar stores do not sell the paper anymore by request of the local newspaper; too many people were going into the store and pulling the inserts out! 🙁
A friend of mine works at a gas station and if they have any leftover Sunday papers, they can take out the inserts and still get credit from the newspaper for unsold papers. You might want to check with other stores that sell the Sunday paper and see if they’ll do that for you.
I also use the local library coupon bin–in fact, I maintain ours! Patrons drop off unused inserts and I clip them and put them in a bin for others to take as needed.
I’ve bought inserts from wholecouponinserts.com and have bought single coupons from My Coupon Hunter. My Coupon Hunter also has this neat monthly subscription where you pay a flat rate for XX amount of coupons and shipping/handling. There are tons of resources out there now!
