Recently, Kristi at More Than Cents, had a reader who had an issue with her Hy-Vee store not accepting ANY internet printable coupons from Smart Source. I got in touch with my Hy-Vee store contacts and they have issued this statement for me to pass along to all of you:
Our individual stores have the authority to determine their own policies and practices when it comes to the redemption of internet coupons. Some stores have put restrictions on the redemption of internet coupons due to issues with fraud and the difficulty involved in sorting out legitimate coupon offers from counterfeit scams. We understand that this may be disappointing to customers who believe they’ve discovered a great coupon deal on the internet; ultimately, however, the store is the one left holding the bag when manufacturers refuse reimbursement for counterfeit coupons. To avoid this scenario, some stores have opted to refuse all coupons from sources such as that are known to have trouble with fraudulent coupons.
I would suggest that concerned customers talk to the store director or manager of store operations at their Hy-Vee stores regarding each store’s coupon policy.
I want to thank Hy-Vee for taking the time to address this concern and share this information with me so I could post it here for all of you. Hopefully you don’t have this problem where you shop, but if you do, this should shed some light as to what is taking place. It is so sad that stores have to react like this, but with so much fraud with printed coupons, it is understood why they may have to use such measures to protect themselves.
