What is the difference between Jet and Amazon?
Jet.com is a newer company, which was started to give Amazon a bit of competition. There are a lot of questions circulating and people are trying to determine not only how they compare, but actually which service is better (and why).
Jet.com: There is absolutely no annual fee to be a member. You can even get free two-day shipping when you spend $35 or more. Signing up with Jet is completely free (no obligations).
Amazon: If you want to get free shipping on all items, then you will have to fork over the $99 annual fee for Prime. However, the fee covers much more than just free shipping. You get perks like streaming videos, music, photo storage – and more. If you do not pay for the service, then your $49+ order will also ship for free.
Final Thoughts: The big difference here is the free shipping threshold. However, if you belong to Prime, this is not an issue for you.
RETURN PRODUCT FEES
Jet.com: All orders can be returned for free within 30 days after purchase. However, if you waive the free return option, you can save a bit more on your purchase. The reason they do this is that if you do return something, the company has to eat that cost. If you agree not to opt into the free return feature, then you can get additional savings on your purchase.
Amazon: It is a bit trickier with Amazon. Since they have a marketplace, that means 3rd party sellers can have different return policies than Amazon, so keep that in mind when making your purchase.
However, if you buy something through Amazon, only items which say free returns are eligible. If the item does not clearly include this indication on it, then the cost of shipping returns will be deducted when returned (for reason other than damage or error in fulfillment by Amazon).
Final Thoughts: Both have free returns, but being able to save a bit more by not needing to return something (just because you do not want it) gives Jet.com a bit of the edge on this feature.
DEBT vs. CREDIT — PERKS AND SAVINGS
Jet.com: When shopping on-line you have have to use some method of plastic to pay. If you shop with your debit card, Jet will give you an additional 1.5% discount on your purchase. The reason for this is that when you shop using credit, retailers pay an additional fee, whereas when you shop using debit, your bank is responsible for the fees. Jet.com is in turn, passing additional savings on to you.
Amazon: If you sign up for the Amazon credit card, you can receive a free Amazon gift card (value as much as $80).
They do offer additional ongoing perks such as 3% cash back and the ability to earn points. You can then use your free points towards additional purchases.
Final Thoughts: For someone who does not own a credit card (and does not want one), using Jet is a great way to shop online and get additional savings. However, if you are the credit card shopper, Amazon might actually edge out Jet here as you continue to earn more on all purchases.
Jet.com: This company keeps only the every day essentials in the warehouse. This gives them the ability to ship within 2 days. However, other items will ship directly from the retailer and those items ship within 2 – 5 days.
Amazon: Prime members can receive items within 2 days. If you opt for a bit of a slower method, Amazon will reward you with a free $1 MP3 credit. Shipping prices can vary however, as not all items qualify for the free shipping method (due to third party sellers), so you must carefully review details about the seller and shipping costs before placing your order.
Final Thoughts: The biggest issue is what Jet.com has on hand vs. Amazon. Amazon’s warehouses are extremely large and scattered around the country, which allows them to have more items on hand. This makes many items (even those outside of essentials) available and in-stock for shipping, which means they can arrive within 2 days.
ADD MORE – SAVE MORE
Jet.com: Jet has what are called smart items. You will find them on their site with a small green dollar sign notation. When you add these items to your cart, you can actually increase your savings. For instance, you might find that you can save when you add both laundry detergent and dryer sheets to your cart. Need razors? Add the shaving cream for an additional discount.
Amazon: Amazon offers the Subscribe & Save program. When you sign up for recurring shipments of household items, they will offer an additional 5% savings. However, if you add a purchase a total of 5 subscribe and save items to your cart in a single month, your savings increases to 15% off.
In addition to this program, Amazon also offers Prime Pantry, which offers additional discounts on food items (but make sure you are carefully comparing store prices, as this is not always the best way to shop for food and household products).
Final Thoughts: While I love that Subscribe & Save offers an additional discount, you do have to remember to suspend future shipments once your items have been sent to you (or it will recur again the following month — or time frame you set up at the time of purchase). However, if you only want one or two items, Jet.com gives you a great way to really increase your savings.
I had to compare prices on several items. Some were less expensive on Jet yet others were more expensive. You may also still find a better deal at your local store (even on-line). As usual, when it comes to really getting the best deal, you will want to compare all sites because prices vary and you will have to put in a little effort to ensure you are getting the best deal.
Here are a few examples of what we found:
Angel Soft Bathroom Tissue, 24 regular rolls
Amazon price: $15.20
Jet.com price: $12.10 (just $0.04 more than Walmart’s price)
Huggies Wipes Refill, 648 count
Jet.com price: $15.23 (before discounts)
Amazon price: $14.45 (before any Amazon Family discount)
If you sign up with Jet.com, you can save 15% off of your very first purchase with the code 15NOW (which can easily make for a better deal than what you can find at Amazon or even in the store, depending upon what you purchase).
