I received a device to facilitate my review.
The opinions here are my own and were not influenced by any parties.
I’ve got three kids. They love to do all the things kids do. They play baseball, basketball, board games, draw…and also love electronics. Most of those electronics involve things such as kid videos and their ever beloved — Minecraft.
I felt pretty good about the safeguards we had in place on every device. We thought we were secure. That was until we checked a report about something that came on up one of our devices. I was not pleased that they were allowed to search for that. What happened to the protection that was suppose to be in place? Why had it failed.
My husband and I felt like we were fighting an uphill battle. We had done everything we thought was right. We had sites blocked, software installed, you name it. Apparently, it was not the answer. Fortunately for me, I received an email around this same time from a company called KoalaSafe. It seemed we found the solution.
KoalaSafe is a device that plugs into your current router and helps keep your kids safe. Not only keeps them safe, but allows you better control over the times of day that they can actually ACCESS the internet!! That is an added perk.
The device is pretty small. It fit into my hand easily. You have to plug in two cords to get it up and running. One is the power cord. The other plugs into one of the LAN ports on the back of your router. Once that is done, you may need to reset your router, just to make the connection to the devices in your home (at least, I had to).
Next, download the free app to your phone or tablet. You will be prompted to create an account. It will want to pair your device. This may take a couple of attempts to get the connection through. Once you see that, you will want to set up a NEW access password. This way, you can better control the devices and allow them access to the internet.
You are now connected and ready to roll! The next step is to check the settings which are allowed by everyone. These are the settings for your own laptop, tablet and phone. You may want to restrict your own access to malware, adult sites, social media, etc (especially if your kids use your device at any time).
Next, you can create a profile for each of your children. You will be able to allow all sorts of settings and features such as shopping, apps, gaming, videos, etc. Once you have the browsing features set up, you can then create a schedule! You can set the times allowed for each day of the week individually. So, if you happen to allow them more on-line time on Tuesday night, you can do so.
What is even better is that you can track the usage for every. single. device. You can see where your kids are spending their time. If they happen to start to use a certain site or app more often, you will know about it and can look into it as needed.
As a parent, part of my job is to protect my kids. I want them understand the dangers on the Internet (which we discuss frequently), but I also want to make sure that we have systems in place to help me with this. I can’t watch them 24/7. It just is impossible. KoalaSafe has given both my husband and I peace of mind in knowing that they are only online when we want them to be and that they are visiting the sites and locations which are allowed.
WHAT DOES IT COST?
Now that you know what KoalaSafe can do, I am sure you want to know the cost. You can get a free trial package, which only allows you access to the apps so you can try to set it up that way (I honestly did not even go this route).
To get the device, with access to all of the settings you want and need, the cost is $99. That may seem expensive, but I would spend just about anything I could, in order to keep my kids safe. You can even try it for 30 days and get a full refund, should you find that it does not work for you.
