Overage refers to when a coupon is worth more than the product itself, and you can receive cash back, or money applied to the balance of your aditional items in your shopping cart. Walmart will give you cash back, as it is in their policy to do so, whereas Dollar General will just apply the balance to the remainder of your items in your shopping cart. Retailers that give you cash back, or who allow overage, are able to do so without taking a loss because the manufacturer’s are actually giving them the full amount of the coupon back, when the coupon is used.
So don’t feel bad when the tides turn this way and you are able to score some cash, or some additional free items in your cart, but rejoice! If a retailer does not give cash back or allow overage, we have noted it in our scenarios below:
