As parents, we know work hard to teach our children about safety. We know about discussing stranger danger and even drugs, but how often do you think about fire safety? It is really something that doesn’t quite often cross our minds (at least for me).
When it comes to helping my kids understand and learn, I find that if I can make it fun and interesting for them, they are 1) more likely to actually take time to watch/listen and 2) actually retain what they’ve just seen. Videos, games and whatnot work so much better than a boring talk from mom and dad (wouldn’t you agree)?
I recently learned about two new fun FREE videos from Sparky’s Schoolhouse. They do have a fun app for your device (which my kid’s really enjoyed) and now they’ve got 2 fun new videos you can watch with your own kids:

What’s That Sound? By Recess Monkey:
What we loved about these videos the most were the songs! They were just so catchy, you can’t help but sing along. We loved how they incorporated safety and what to do.
The one above called Little Rosalie by Steve Songs is geared for Preschool and Kindergarten aged kids. It was perfect for my 5 year old. It was really upbeat when talking about a scary topic. In fact, my daughter was dancing and singing along while she was watching it!! She was singing that she had to listen for the beep (and I liked that she could hear what it actually sounded like without having to test it in our home).
The second video, What’s That Sound? by Recess Monkey was a little more modern and seemed to strike a chord with my kids. Of course, my 9 year old thought she was “too cool” to watch, but I noticed her staring at the screen and watching and smiling – so I think that she liked it! Again, it teaches kids what to listen for and what to do.
Now that we’ve got these songs, we can actually remind our kids about fire safety through song. That way, they don’t think we are always lecturing as much as having fun — and they still learn what we need them to know! Totally a WIN-WIN situation!!
Make sure you watch both videos above and also visit Sparky’s Schoolhouse for more great information about teaching your own kids (and even classroom) all about fire safety! They’ve got GREAT lesson plans just for you! Head HERE to get these plans!
